It's easy to just think that grass just looks after itself. The reality is that grass needs regular TLC. It's not hard to understand the damage that the summer heatwaves cause, due to high evapotranspiration water loss, causing heat stress. Similarly, wet weather can also cause just as much mayhem. We're not just talking about the rain-rain-and-more-rain that we've been having; morning dew can be just as problematic. If moisture sits on the leaf surface it increases the risk of fungal diseases, such as Fusarium, Microdochium Patch and Anthracnose. All of which can inhibit grass growth, or in the worst cases kill off areas of turf.

One of the most effective ways to prevent fungal diseases, without using fungicide chemicals, is to remove standing surface water on leaves. This is why you'll often see our grounds keeper brushing the grass.... (Please contact us if you see him hoovering the turf as this may suggest that he's gone bonkers!). The other none chemical way to deter fungal disease is to maximise airflow over the surface of the grass and sunlight. Both help to reduce moisture which fungal diseases need to thrive. To help with this we've given the laylandii conifer hedge around the green a short back and sides, or what used to be called in the 1990's a 'Lionel Blaircut'.

... If you weren't around in 1992 it's well worth having a watch of the iconic 'Harp Lager' advert: Harp Lager - Hair Salon - Lionel Blair
