Bowling - How do I Start?

We'd love to welcome new bowlers to have a go. Individuals, family groups or even a work/corporate groups are more than welcome to come and play bowls... If you become a member, that's fantastic, but even if you just want to arrange a one-off event for your club or workplace that's fine by us... We just want as many people as possible to Try Bowls.

STEP 1... CONTACT US - Drop us an email and we'll get back to you to have a chat and arrange a meet & greet, so you can have a look around and if you fancy it, have a go at playing bowls.

STEP 2... REPEAT - We're more than happy for new bowlers to come and have a few taster sessions with us, for free, before you decide whether you want to join our little club. We hope you will become a member and you never know, you might be keen and want to try a session with our bowling coach!

REMEMBER

Bowls is SIMPLE... Each player takes it in turns to send a composite plastic sphere [the bowl, sometimes called a 'wood'] along a flat piece of grass towards a smaller stationary composite plastic sphere, located about 25 metres away... You repeat this up to 56 times during a match... The player who gets closest wins points each time... The player with most points wins.

Bowls is EASY... The composite plastic sphere has an uneven weight distribution [termed a 'bias'], so travel along a curve; never in a straight line... The weather, the length of the grass, and the bowlers skill affects how far the bowl travels and where it stops... Not forgetting that our opponents might try to knock your bowls out of the way or put their bowls in the way of yours, so you can't score.

That's it really; all you need to know to start playing bowls. Remember, lawn bowls is not just about competition; it's about camaraderie and having fun, but in case you want a deeper dive into the rules, strategy and tactics, take a look at these guides:
