Kirkbymoorside Bowling Club Hovingham & District Bowls League

The Hovingham & District League is a flat green bowls league based in the Ryedale District of North Yorkshire. Matches are played on Thursday evenings from April till August.  Clubs also compete for the Waltham Cup. There are 7 teams from 6 clubs - Kirkbymoorside, Pickering, Sessay, Settrington, Swinton, & Thirsk (2 Teams).  FULL LEAGUE FIXTURES & RESULTS 2025:

THURSDAY MAY 1st 2025 - 

KIRKBYMOORSIDE (68) 8 v 2 (30) THIRSK-B

Kirkbymoorside bowling club got their Hovingham and District Bowls Lleague campaign and defence of their crown for the last 3 seasons off to a winning start by beating Thirsk B by a total of 38 shots. One rink won 35-10, one rink won 22-10 and one rink lost by 1 shot with the score at 11-12.

 

THURSDAY MAY 15th 2025 - 

THIRSK-A (46) 3 v 7 (52) KIRKBYMOORSIDE 

In the second match of the season the game started off as a cagey affair with both teams not giving too many shots away and the scores at 5 ends across the boards was KMS 9 shots to Thirsk A's 11 shots. Over the next 5 ends across the 3 rinks KMS picked up 14 shots as against Thirsk 11 shots with the scores at 10 ends KMS 23 - 22 Thirsk-A. The game then started to swing in the favour of Thirsk-A when they picked up 22 shots as against KMS 14 shots. Thirsk-A went into a 7 shot lead after 15 ends across the 3 boards with the scores at KMS 37 - 44 Thirsk-A. Going into the latter stages of the game rink one KMS was 9-14 down with 3 ends to play, Thirsk scored another two singles to go into the last end 16-9 up, on the last end KMS scored 3 shots but losing by 4 shots KMS 12-16 Thirsk-A. Rink two at 15 ends KMS were 4 shots down but did well to score a 1,2 &1 over the last 3 ends to tie their game at KMS 15- 15 Thirsk-A. Rink 3 finished off their game quite strong to score well with a 1,5 & 2 to win by a margin of 10 shots with the score at KMS 25-15 Thirsk-A.

 

THURSDAY MAY 22nd 2025 - 

KIRKBYMOORSIDE (69) 8 v 2 (29) SWINTON

On a beautiful late Spring evening in a top of the table clash, the green at Kirkbymoorside was in excellent condition and has never been so fast at this time year, and saw the jacks being sent off the green on the opening end, across all three rinks. Kirkbymoorside stormed off at blistering pace and were 22 -7 shots up after 5 ends. At 10 ends there was no let up in the pace and Kirkbymoorside extended their lead to 47-12. At 15 ends Kirkbymoorside put the game out of sight extending their lead to 59-24. At the close of the game at 18 ends kirkbymoorside took victory by a 40 shots margin.

 

THURSDAY MAY 29th 2025 - 

SETTRINGTON (20) 0 v 10 (35) KIRKBYMOORSIDE 

Kirkbymoorside bowling club maintained their lead at the top of the Hovingham and District Bowls League with an away victory over Settrington bowling club. The match was a cagey affair for the first 11 ends across the two rinks with the score at Kirkbymoorside 16 v Settrington 15. On a tricky bowling surface and after Kirkbymoorside settled and found the run of the green, over the last seven ends of the game Kirkbymoorside dug in deep and scored 19 shots as against 5 shots for Settrington.

 

THURSDAY JUNE 5th 2025 - 

SESSAY (30) 0 v 10 (81) KIRKBYMOORSIDE 

On a mild, sunny evening, the green at Sessay bowling club started out a little heavy, and pushy, but the rinks were running true. Kirkbymoorside built early leads across all 3 rinks. Towards the latter stages of the match Sessay began to pull some shots back across 2 rinks, but were unable to close the gap from the early leads and Kirkbymoorside closed the match with a strong win.

Kirkbymoorside (71) 10 v 0 (32) Pickering

 

THURSDAY JUNE 19th 2025

There was a break in league action for the Hovingham bowls league in favour of Waltham Cup action where Kirkbymoorside bowling club played Swinton bowling club at Kirkbymoorside on a warm sunny evening and an easy running bowling green.

Kirkbymoorside started off well and went into an 11-1 led at 5 ends and there was no let up in scoring for Kirkbymoorside with the score at 10 ends 36-23 and after 15 ends Kirkbymoorside we’re leading 49-35.

In the latter stages of the game Swinton had the better of the scoring by scoring 13 shots as against Kirkbymoorside’s 5 shots but just not enough to win the game and Kirkbymoorside won the game by 6 shots with the scores at 54-48

TUESDAY JULY 8th 2025 - WALTHAM CUP SEMI-FINAL

Kirkbymoorside 67v 22 Sessay

Tuesday 8th July saw Kirkbymoorside bowling club play Sessay bowling club in the Semi Final of the Waltham cup at Thirsk bowling club green on a lovely sunny and warm evening.

The opening 5 ends across the 3 rinks was a close and cagey affair and getting to know the green with the scores at Kirkbymoorside 13- 8 Sessay. Over the next 5 ends Kirkbymoorside started to get a grip of the game and moved onto 27 shots against Sessay 15 shots. The next 5 ends across the rinks saw Kirkbymoorside almost double their shots tally to 53 shots with Sessay picking up only 4 shots to add to their tally. The last 3 ends saw Kirkbymoorside to go on and be victors on the evening and book their place in the final. 

Kirkbymoorside will play Pickering bowling club in the final on Tuesday 29th July, 6.30 pm, at Settrington bowling club.

 

THURSDAY JULY 10th 2025

Kirkbymoorside (53) 8 v 2 (50) Thirsk-A

Thursday 10th July Kirkbymoorside bowling club welcomed and played Thirsk A in the latest round of the Hovingham and District bowls league in which was a top of the table clash.

This game was always going to be a close encounter and the scores through the evening showed just how close it was.

At 5 ends the scores were Kirkbymoorside 16-12 Thirsk A, over the next 5 ends neither team ran away with the scoring with the sore at 10 ends Kirkbymoorside 30- 28 Thirsk. This remained the pattern of the game and at 15 ends the scores were Kirkbymoorside 46-42 Thirsk A,

Over the last 3 ends of the game Kirkbymoorside held their nerve and ended up winning the game by only 3 shots with the final score after 18 end across the 3 rinks, Kirkbymoorside 53 - 50 Thirsk A

Kirkbymoorside 8 points v Thirsk A 2 points.

 

THURSDAY JULY 17th 2025

Swinton (38) 2 v 6 (59) Kirkbymoorside 

2nd placed Swinton were the visitors on a chilly and windy evening at Kirkbymoorside. It was a good match on all three rinks and played in a friendly but competitive spirit. Kirkbymoorside ran out winners, 59 - 38, for a 6 - 2 points victory which keeps the club on course to retain the League winners trophy that was won in 2024. Kirkby sit top of the league with a lead of 24 points over second placed Malton and with the semi final of the Fred Husband Trophy to come. 

 

THURSDAY JULY 24th 2025

Kirkbymoorside (28) 3 v 7 (39) Settrington

Kirkbymoorside suffered their first defeat of the 2025 season in the Hovingham and district bowls league with a 7-3 victory for Settrington bowling club.

The game started off with Settrington quick out of the blocks on one rink scoring 10 shots against Kirkbymoorside’s 4 shots, and Kirkbymoorside on the other rink leading 5-0 after 5 ends. With the scores at 5 ends across both rinks Kirkbymoorside 9-10 Settrington.

Settrington scored quite heavily over the next 5 ends across both rinks scoring 15 shots against Kirkbymoorside’s 1 shot with the scores moving onto Kirkbymoorside 10-25 Settrington. The next 5 ends across both rinks was even with both teams scoring 9 shots each to move the scores onto Kirkbymoorside 19-34 Settrington. The last 3 ends saw Kirkbymoorside score 9 shots against Settrintons 5 shots. The end scores were Kirkbymoorside 28-39 Settrington, a well deserved win for Settrington who took the game to Kirkbymoorside with some good bowling.

Even though Kirkbymoorside were beat on the evening the 3 points scored was enough to see them win the league with two games still to play.
